Household eco-san toilets In 1995 Bless set out upon the ambitious objective of total sanitation of its target villages. This was only possible through the use of appropriate technology; the villages are situated in a shallow water area, hence flush toilets are inappropriate as it is not possible to dispose of the water. Thus the idea of the household eco-san toilet was born. The eco-san toilet presents a wide range of advantages for such rural communities as listed above; hence, Bless moved to an eco-san only policy. Bless has since constructed 433 household eco-san toilets in ten target villages. All constructions were combined with training to inform people how to use and maintain the toilet and to outline the benefits of the system. The toilets are still being used today; they reveal good long-term sustainability and have proven to be a great success with the local community. …………………………………………………………………………………………… Bless itself continues to endorse the eco-san toilet, as is confirmed by the latest women’s eco-san complex. However, our input has not ended, we continue to evaluate and monitor this system in order to provide maximum benefit to all. Nevertheless, in a country where water scarcity and low sanitation are not only persistent major threats but a reality, the eco-san toilet is one progressive step towards positive change for both the environment and humanity.
